A planning application for a £10 million housing scheme within the Lancaster Canal Quarter has been submitted following a public consultation exercise.

The residential development for 39 dwellings comprising three-storey townhouses and apartments has been put forward by South Lakes Housing, which was selected as Lancaster Council’s preferred developer following a competitive tendering process.

The affordable housing project will be situated on Nelson St, the site of a Lancaster City Council car park.  Replacement car parking is proposed to be created by the re-opening of the multi storey Castle car park.

Designed by David Cox Architects, the scheme will support Lancaster City Council’s Canal Quarter Masterplan by enhancing connectivity between the city centre and the canal, creating a new public space, and promoting sustainable travel.

S&L Planning Consultants submitted the planning application for the project. Deborah Smith, director of the consultancy, said: “Following the consultation exercise, feedback from the public was very positive and in favour of the project.

“Not only will the Nelson Street development provide high-quality housing in the heart of the Canal Quarter and provide employment during its construction, the scheme also resonates with the objective of the Council’s Canal Quarter Masterplan to create a vibrant new neighbourhood.”

The application is due to be considered by Lancaster City Council in September.
