Westmorland and Furness Council has approved Oakmere Homes’ plans to develop a mixed-use housing scheme on a 16.5-acre site off Beetham Road in Milnthorpe. The decision was made at a strategic planning committee meeting yesterday.
The Milnthorpe housing development will include a mix of apartments, bungalows, and houses. After a brief deferral in January to address concerns about nutrient neutrality, access to the A6, and affordable housing, the council’s planning officers deemed the revised plans satisfactory.
The new development will connect to the A6 via a newly constructed road junction. To fulfil affordable housing obligations, Oakmere Homes will provide 19 units, including one and two-bedroom apartments, shared ownership houses, and first homes.
The remaining homes will cater to the open market, with a range of one to four-bedroom options.
S&L Planning Consultants advised Oakmere on its application. The project team also included Gadsden Consulting, Greenlane Archaeology, CP Viability, PDP Associates, Martin Environmental Solutions, C.J.O’Flaherty, Envirotech, and DTPC.
The Milnthorpe housing development is also expected to deliver a significant biodiversity net gain, exceeding 10%, through the transformation of grassland into more dynamic green spaces.
