Exciting developments are afoot at Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk campus. John Turner Construction Group is poised to begin construction on a brand-new teaching and research building dedicated to the ever-evolving field of life sciences. This marks a significant milestone in the university’s ongoing growth trajectory and its commitment to fostering the next generation of scientific minds.

From Green Light to Groundbreaking

Following approval from West Lancashire Council on Friday, construction is anticipated to commence in the coming days. With a targeted completion date by the end of 2024, the project promises to be fully operational within the current academic year, injecting new energy and resources into the university’s life sciences curriculum.

ABW Architects masterminded the design of this three-storey facility. The building will boast an array of cutting-edge features to support both teaching and research endeavours. Imagine a vibrant space equipped with dedicated teaching and research laboratories, seminar/meeting rooms to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange, specialised plant rooms for intricate experiments, and well-appointed office spaces for faculty and researchers.

Transforming a Space

The new life sciences building will occupy a strategically chosen location within Edge Hill University’s Ormskirk campus. Situated on a two-and-a-half-acre plot on St Helens Road, the site currently houses a former car park and student accommodation slated for demolition. This strategic land use signifies Edge Hill’s commitment to optimising its campus footprint and creating dedicated spaces for academic excellence.

Investing in the Future

This £17.4 million project represents the first phase of a much larger vision. It serves as the cornerstone of a comprehensive masterplan designed to revitalise the central campus area. Future plans include the construction of a new Students’ Union, a vital hub for student life and engagement, alongside specialised facilities for the university’s burgeoning Medical School.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Steve Igoe underscores the significance of this development, highlighting it as “a pivotal moment in Edge Hill University’s ongoing growth.” He emphasises the ever-evolving nature of life sciences and the tremendous opportunities this field presents for advancing scientific knowledge within the UK. “We must take proactive steps to establish facilities that will cater to the needs of future researchers and students,” he adds, acknowledging the university’s forward-thinking approach.

Building on a Strong Foundation

The Office for Students has demonstrably recognised the project’s importance in propelling Edge Hill University’s educational and research endeavours. Their contribution of £5.8 million in funding serves as a testament to the project’s potential impact.
